The proof

We store it. We can't open it.

Your passphrase never leaves your hands. A break-in at our end hands a thief locked boxes and nothing to open them with.

No ad pixels and no analytics. You're welcome to check this page.

Readable without us.

A full export any time, unlocked, with a readable copy of the whole vault. Keep it with the will.

Picture the Sunday after. Your daughter reads your note before she rings anyone. Your grandson gets the watch, and the story that goes with it.

Prices in Australian dollars, GST included where it applies. 30-day change-of-mind refund on the vault and Family. The Paper Edition and the Fridge Card are sold on their own at any time. Nothing lapses when someone dies.

What Spare Key replaces, and what it doesn't.

It works alongside your will and your password manager. It doesn't replace either.

Questions

Before you buy.

Can Spare Key read what I write?

No. Everything is locked on your own phone or laptop before it reaches us. Until your keyholders hand over their pieces of the key after the waiting time, nobody can read a word, us included.

Why not just use Google Drive or iCloud?

Cloud storage keeps files. It doesn't decide who gets which one, or when. Put everything in a shared folder and either nobody can get in after you've gone or everyone sees everything. Spare Key keeps each note for the person it's written to and holds it until your keyholders say it's time, with 7 or 14 days for you to say no. It also walks you through what to write down, which a blank folder never will.

Is Spare Key a will?

No. Spare Key keeps a copy of your will and says where the signed original is. Your will still needs to be made and signed the proper way, usually with a solicitor.

What if I forget my passphrase?

When you open your vault you print a recovery sheet. The code on it lets you set a new passphrase. Keep it with your will. Without the passphrase or the sheet, the vault stays shut.

Do I need Keeper?

No. The vault is $199 once, with no yearly fee. Keeper adds the silence check, where your keyholders are asked to check on you if you go quiet for six months, and 10 GB of storage instead of 2 GB.

Who decides when my notes open?

You choose who each note is for and when it opens. Your keyholders, up to five of them, can ask for your notes to open. You're told straight away and have 7 or 14 days to say no with one tap.

Can I take everything out?

Yes, any time. One button downloads every note, photo and recording, unlocked, plus a readable copy of the whole vault.

Can I give it as a gift?

Yes. Buy the vault and send them the sign-up link from your receipt page. They open it with their own passphrase, and you never see inside.

Is it really one payment?

Yes. $199 opens your vault with no yearly fee, for as long as Spare Key runs. It includes 2 GB of room. Keeper is optional, at $49 a year, if you'd like check-ins and 10 GB.

What happens if Spare Key ever closes?

We'd email every account holder at least 90 days before and keep exports working until then. You can download everything, unlocked, at any time anyway. Keep a copy with your will, the same way you'd keep a copy of anything that matters.

How does Family work?

You get six sign-up links. Each one opens a separate private vault with its own passphrase and its own 2 GB, and nobody can see into anyone else's. Send them to anyone you like, whenever you like. Unused links don't expire, and Keeper can be added to any vault on its own.

Can I change my mind?

Yes. Email us within 30 days of buying the vault or Family and we'll refund you in full. Download anything you want to keep first, because we close the vault when we refund it.

Should I put my passwords in it?

Keep passwords in a password manager. Use Spare Key to say which one you use and how your executor gets in. Most have an emergency access setting made for this. Spare Key is for the map, not the keys to every account.

Who can read a Paper Edition?

To print your book, you send us a copy of your vault as a PDF. That copy is readable by us and our printer, and we delete it once your book is posted. If you'd rather nobody sees it, print the same PDF at home for free. It never leaves your browser.
